It can be scary, painful, and just not fun to deal with when you break a tooth. The first thing you should do in the event of breaking a tooth is call your local emergency dentist. Dr. Basil Saiedy is an emergency dentist here in Lutherville and Clarksville, Maryland that is ready and available to assist any resident in the area with a broken tooth.
The very first thing you should do is call our emergency dental office. Once you have broken a tooth, you must receive treatment right away. Time is of the essence due to the possibility of your natural tooth being restored if treated quickly. Once you have contacted our office and set up a time to come in to receive treatment, we suggest that in between the call and your appointment, you do the following things:
- Try hard not to eat hard, hot, and cold foods. After breaking your tooth, it will be ultra-sensitive due to different layers of the tooth being exposed. Try to eat on the opposite side of your mouth.
- Take the appropriate dosage of over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen and Tylenol if you feel pain.
- Try and locate the broken portion of the tooth. In some cases, it is possible to reattach the broken piece depending on the severity of the break.
Upon arriving at Green Spring Dental Care, Dr. Saiedy will work with you to determine which restorative treatment would be best for your tooth and smile.
Broken Tooth Restorations
Composite Filling: Breaking or fracturing a small portion of your tooth can easily be fixed with a quick procedure called composite fillings. The material builds up the chipped-off piece and then hardens with a blue light.
Dental Crown: A small chip can be easily repaired by filling the chip or crack with plastic resin. When a tooth has a significant fracture, and a dental filling cannot fix the tooth, we may recommend a crown. Dental crowns are caps made of porcelain that cover the tooth’s whole surface.
Root Canal: If the break runs deep through the nerve of the tooth or the roots, an endodontic procedure called a root canal might be necessary to save the tooth. A root canal involves Dr. Saiedy removing all the nerves in the tooth, down through the root, to prevent the tooth from dying.
Dental Implant: Dr. Saiedy does all that he can to protect and restore your natural teeth following a dental emergency, such as a break. If a break is deemed too severe and the rest of the tooth needs to be extracted, we offer a complete tooth replacement treatment such as a dental implant. An implant is made out of a titanium screw that we surgically embed into the jawbone to stabilize a prosthetic tooth crown. Not only do dental implants restore your smile they will also repair or maintain your oral health.
